  • ABOUT LESOTHO

    The Kingdom of Lesotho is a monarchy founded some two hundred years ago by Moshoeshoe I. It attained independence from Great Britain on 4th. October, 1966. Head of State is King Letsie III and following elections in 1993 is governed by a democratically elected Government
     
    HOW TO GET TO LESOTHO
     
    .The easiest way to get to Lesotho is to fly to Johannesburg, South Africa from where there are daily connecting flights to Maseru International Airport. There are also good road links between Johannesburg and Maseru and this journey takes approximately four hours. Car hire is available in Johannesburg and Maseru.  
     
    Currency
     
    The currency is Maloti (US$ 1 = M. 11.00). The South African Rand may also be used in Lesotho and is on a par with the Maloti. Foreign Exchange is freely available in Lesotho.
     
     LANGUAGE
     
    Sesotho and English are the two official languages of Lesotho.  
     
     RIDING CONDITIONS
     
    Altitude - The altitude varies from 1,500 masl (meters above sea level) in the lowlands to nearly 3,000 masl  in the mountains.Route - The route comprises sand and rock tracks with hard surfaces and donkey passes through mountain passes which are generally very steep and rocky.. Several deep rivers may have to be crossed depending on weather conditions.
     
    CLASSES
     
    Bikes are divided into various classes;125, 200, 250,open and seniors (who follow the less difficult car route. Quad racers are also catered for and follow the car route. The conditions favour light two stroke machines and the event is normally won by a 250cc Class machine. Any types of tires may be used.  Lights are optional but recommended.
     
     
     MEDICAL FACILITIES
     
    The race is constantly monitored by radio links and helicopters. Helicopters are equipped with specialised medical equipment, casualty doctors and paramedics. In the event of serious injury, competitors are flown directly to Bloemfontein Hospital (+/- 35 mins.) which is one of the best hospitals in South Africa. It must be stressed that in the 43 year history of the event, that there have been no fatalities.  

     

     VISA REQUIREMENTS
     
    There are no visa requirements for entry into Lesotho

     

     IMPORTATION OF MOTORCYCLES
     
    Motorcycles may be either air freighted via Johannesburg or sea freighted via Durban and must be accompanied by a carnet du passage. Bike rentals can be arranged .

     

     TELEVISION
     
    The event is televised and is broadcast on South African television and has also in the past been broadcast on European networks.
